Who We Are
Hamilton District Christian High has been a thriving learning community in the Hamilton area for 70 years. We are an independent school, based in the Reformed Christian faith, that prepares students to be citizens who participate in their communities, discern God’s truth, and care for the world. To us, educating teenagers involves more than passing on information. Our mission is to cultivate character through learning for a life of service to God. In this sense, learning must be more purposeful than just reproducing some knowledge, mastering a skill or concept, and getting a grade. The purpose of our learning is to serve: to solve real-world problems, to meet needs or to create something beautiful. Good learning takes students beyond themselves and beyond our school to be of service in their communities and in the wider world.
Responsibilities of the HDCH Vice Principal of Community and Culture:
We are looking for a Vice Principal of Community and Culture who will be responsible for translating the school mission and vision for students, building a campus community conducive to accomplishing the mission and vision, and helping remove obstacles (relational, social, and psychological) to the mission and vision by problem-solving and resolving conflicts both between students and between students and staff.
As Vice Principal of Community and Culture, you will be expected to:
- Administer the Community Covenant and the Restorative Justice framework
- Plan and lead Grade community events (G9, 10, 11 Days; G12 Trip) and liaise with the Student Council
- Build cooperative relationships with students; develop student leadership and peer mediation
- Follow-up on student attendance and behavioural incidents and implement the school’s related policies
- Mediate conflicts between students, and between students and staff
- Support staff in classroom and behavioural management
- Model best teaching practices as you teach one class each semester (33% teaching portfolio)
- Be a part of the Leadership Team, working to accomplish the school’s mission and vision
- Advise and assist the Principal in all decisions relevant to the mission and vision
- Perform other duties that the Principal may assign from time to time.
Qualifications and Attributes:
- A deep and sincere Christian faith, evident in your life and daily conduct.
- Relevant teaching qualifications (OCT). (Possessing the CSTC would be an advantage, as would further education and experience in school administration.)
- Familiarity with restorative justice would be an asset.
- Excellent planning, organisation, and communication skills.
- A track record of exemplary classroom teaching and classroom management.
- A love for teenagers and an ability to form cooperative relationships with them.
- A reputation as a supportive colleague and good team player on staff.
